‘Gulf Stream’ Heavenly Bamboo
Nandina ‘Gulf Stream’ is a workhorse of a plant. It provides year-round interest in the garden, but really starts to shine during the fall and winter months.
If you’re looking for a sturdy, adaptable evergreen plant you really can’t go wrong with ‘Gulf Stream’. Plants are compact; 3′ – 4′ tall by up to 3′ wide, with soft lgreen leaves vaguely reminiscent of bamboo (hence their common name of heavenly bamboo). The new growth on ‘Gulf Stream’ is coppery-colored, and shifts to a glowing orange-red during the winter months. Creamy white flowers appear in late spring but unlike most other Nandinas, ‘Gulf Stream’ rarely produces berries.
‘Gulf Stream’ also works well as a container plant, and can provide a nice spot of color on a patio, near a pool, or in an outdoor sitting area. These plants are definitely not garden divas, ‘Gulf Stream’ has a moderate growth rate, grows well in a variety of situations, and require average water. While ‘Gulf Stream’ can be grown in full sun, plants look their best if you can providen them with a bit of afternoon shade.
